Hope and Help for Federal Employees Facing Job Loss: A Personal Story and Action Plan
If you're a Federal employee facing a forced separation or the threat of one, I understand the intense anxiety and uncertainty you're experiencing right now. Whether you're a permanent employee being offered separation incentives or a newer employee facing termination or the possibility of one, this sudden change can feel overwhelming. I want to share my story and offer concrete guidance to help you navigate this challenge.
As someone who left Federal service myself—albeit under different circumstances—I know firsthand that what feels like an ending can become an unexpected beginning. While I chose to take a voluntary buyout from my role leading a statewide veterans' vocational rehabilitation and counseling program, I understand the emotional weight you're carrying, especially if this change wasn't your choice.
Let me be clear: Your current situation is not a reflection of your worth or abilities. Many talented, dedicated public servants are being impacted by these cuts. The key now is to channel your energy into constructive action. Here's what you can do right now:
First, understand and secure your benefits and special programs in which you are enrolled. Even in transition, you may be eligible to keep certain Federal benefits—particularly important is medical insurance. FERS Pension; maintaining the Thrift Savings Plan; long term care and life insurance enrollments; annual and sick leave credits; and even Federal disability retirement are among other possibilities to explore. Don't let anxiety prevent you from exploring, claiming and keeping everything you're entitled to. Review your options with OPM and your agency immediately, and at the right time apply for Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE) benefits through your State. If you're feeling too overwhelmed to tackle this alone, ask a family member or colleague to help you navigate the process.
Second, start planning your next career move today. This active planning serves two crucial purposes: it gives you a sense of control and direction while keeping your mind focused on future possibilities rather than current worries. Begin by:
· Taking inventory of your valuable Federal service skills
· Creating a strong, civilian-focused resume
· Building your LinkedIn profile
· Developing a network of professionals who can help with your transition
To support you during this transition, I'm offering Federal employees free access to comprehensive career transition resources. My team has created an up-to-date book and workbook specifically designed for situations like yours. The book (343 pages) and workbook (62 pages) will guide you through in-depth skills analysis and modern job search strategies.
Federal employees can get free access to these resources in two ways:
1. Download the ebook free on Kindle from 2/24/25 through 2/28/25 (PST). Note that after 2/28 Kindle will revert to selling it at the list price of $8.99.
2. Get the workbook free through 2/28/25 in PDF format by emailing me with the subject line "Federal Employee Request." Include your name, agency, and email address. The workbook is sold in softcover through Kindle for $6.99. So take advantage of getting the free PDF now.
My own transition from Federal service led to founding a successful career consulting company that's still thriving 28 years later. My background in government was in counseling psychology, rehabilitation and professional career counseling. Other former colleagues in the same or different fields found fulfilling roles in university teaching and private industry—opportunities they hadn't considered while feeling 'locked in' to their government positions.
Remember: This challenging period is not the end of your career story—it's a transition point. With proper planning and support, you can emerge stronger and potentially find even more fulfilling opportunities ahead. You've developed valuable skills and experience in Federal service that many employers need. Now is the time to leverage those strengths to prepare for your next chapter.
